Colloquial phrase used to refer to the prosecution history of a patent, i.e., the application, amendments, IDS, office actions, etc. The phrase file wrapper is used because the United States Patent and Trademark Office used to use a paper file wrapper to bind such documents on which an index of all the documents within was inscribed.
