Estoppel

Equitable legal doctrine that refers to someone being precluded, i.e., estopped, from taking a position inconsistent with past statements, positions, or behavior, including inaction. There is a civil law equivalent of estoppel, derived from Roman law, as stated in the maxim: “non concedit venire contra factum proprium,” i.e., do not allow someone to go against their own facts (statements).
