A type of patent search, sometimes called an FTO search, which seeks to determine if, in a given commercial territory and jurisdiction there are patents in force that could prevent a specified business operation. Outside chemical entities, FTO searches can be very difficult to conduct with certainty as there are millions of patents and most businesses have many patentable aspects.
