A number of corporate jurisdictions, most notably Japan, require companies, especially local subsidiaries of foreign companies, to appoint at least one or two representative director(s) who is normally resident in the jurisdiction. The purpose is to ensure that there is at least one senior manager or officer of the local company who is easily amenable to legal sanctions in the event of a violation of local laws, especially company law.
