Lexicographer

Literally a dictionary writer. In technology law, and particularly in claim construction, it usually refers to a phrase of U.S. origin to the effect that a patentee “is his own lexicographer,” i.e., that the applicant for a patent can define the terms used in the patent to suit itself, and only if the patentee has not defined a word, will it be given its normally accepted meaning. See Term-of-Art
