ROM

Read Only Memory, a type of data storage device that is manufactured with fixed contents, usually inserted by “burning in.” ROM is often used to hold programs for embedded systems, as well as for mobile devices such as cell-phones and handheld computers to store the operating system. Some software and databases are sold on detachable ROMs known as dongles (the word dongle is also used to describe as detachable adaptor for computers).
