In the United States, trademark licenses (or assignments) that do not contain provisions to ensure that the quality associated with the mark is maintained may be regarded as “naked,” i.e., not clothed in any meaningful quality standard; as a result the mark can be treated as abandoned and thereby lost. A naked assignment is also known as an Assignment in Gross.
