Abbreviation for military specification. It is the minimum acceptable requirements for products procured by the United States Department of Defense. Use of the term MILSPEC indicates that the product meets applicable military specifications. To reach MILSPEC, a product may also be required to include certain features or MILSPEC quality components. Qualifying for MILSPEC can confer many of the features akin to intellectual property rights in terms of product differentiation, especially where only a limited number of suppliers can reach the required standards.
