Clowns, Code of the

Early form of trade dress or trademark under which clowns maintained a register of the designs of face paint they used and that other clowns, at the risk of boycott, should not use. The code eventually extended to cover stage-name (moniker), costume, and “gags” and “bits” (i.e., personally distinctive aspects of performance).
