Bootlegging

Term for making illicit copies, typically of packaged software and sometimes music. The origin of the term was the smuggling of alcohol (liquor) into work or onto dry (no alcohol ships) in flat ‘naggin bottles’ or hip-flasks concealed in the top of a person’s boot – later the term came to be applied to the smuggling and illicit sale of alcohol during prohibition in the United States.
